French Cooking for People Who Can't

by Julia Hayes, Atheneum, first edition, 1979. Hardback with DJ, 322 pages. If the other Julia's 1961 lndmark tome is Hertz, then this slightly irreverent primer by a New England schoolteacher who spent seven years in France with her husband, sculptor David Hayes, is Avis...or maybe Rent A Wreck. Unpretentious and down to earth (she admits she is slightly dyslexic and she learned by trial and error from French housewives), it's actually a quite good guide to French home cooking. DJ shows slight wear at extremeties. VG+/VG.
