As The World Cooks -- Recipes From Many Lands (1948)


by the International Institute of Lowell, MA, hard-to-find 1948 printing of 1938 publication. Hard boards, spiral binding. Printings were discontinued when World War II broke out, and this is the first post-war edition.

Inside its beautifully handwritten (script) but lithographed 300 pages are recipes from 16 countries as well as New England. Countries represented by multiple recipes are Italy, Spain, Syria, Great Britain, Armenia, Germany, Poland, Albania, Norway, Sweden, Greece, Mexico, Portugal, China, Russia and France. The recipes are swell, and authentic, but it’s the book’s appearance and graphics that is so special and spectacular.

The volume is chocked full of pen and ink illustrations with folklore themes in the style of arts and crafts era! There are 16 different sets of illustrations, each related to the country whose cuisine is presented. There is no editor, contributor, nor illustrator mentioned in the credits for the book.

Covers are bold black on cream paper which have tanned. There is a small 1/8" piece missing from top of front cover near spine There is a ring stain on the back cover. No tears or missing pages. Spiral binding is made of steel. No inscriptions; one additional recipe (written in fountain pen) on the inside of the back cover. VG.
