Cook Book (All Souls Memorial Episcopal Church. D.C., 1956)

$20.00

by Mrs. Edward A. St. John, chairman, Cook Book committee, All Souls Memorial Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C., published circa 1956. Shiny soft boards, comb binding. Printed in Pica typewriter face, 144 pages.

This cookbook from the landmark church located at Connecticut Ave. and Cathedral Avenue, N.W., dates from the Eisenhower administration. It offers recipes from members and as well as wives of the Diplomatic Corps of that era. A section on chutneys, relishes and pickles is terrific. Grandmother's Chow Chow from Mrs. Douglas Tschiffely is our favorite -- great on grilled hot dogs. Her sweetbreads, already simmered and then flattened, and then baked between two thin slices of ham and served "with a rich mushroom sauce" is pretty advanced.

The book also has a local history aspect: it contains many dozens of local ads from Washington businesses, most of which are long gone, but a few, like the Mayflower Hotel, and Gawler's Funeral Home, and Mrs. Tschiffely's husband's pharmacy, are still in business.

Pages are clean but yellowing. Front cover has separated (we will include it). Grease pencil price on inside front cover. Fair only.
