Culinaria European Specialties Volume l

by Christine Westphal, editor, Konemann Publishing, first English edition, 1994, with DJ. Out of print in hardback. Featured are traditional recipes from Northern Europe: England, Scotland, Ireland, Demark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and other member states of the former Soviet Union, Poland, The Czech Republic and Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and The Netherlands.

There is nothing timid or subtle about this large (10 ¾” by 12 ½”), heavy (6.9 lbs.) hardback, with the original dust jacket with a color photo of a a bottle of Scotch, a probably German hard sausage, a couple of tins of Russian Caviar, a Trout and a Leek. Blue DJ spine with titles in yellow and red. Blue covers. 360 pages. These giant volumes by Konemann were the Gargantuan “cooking and culture” blockbuster series – coffee table category – of the last decade.

In addition to this volume, there was a Vol. 2 featuring more Southern countries, and also individual subsequent tomes on Italy (in stock), Spain, China, Southeast Asia and Greece. All of them are big, heavy, splashy, drenched with color photos. Good strong sewn bindings, coated, glossy pages. A lot of cookbook for the price. Great for a gift!

Condition: Pristine -- VG+.
