by Marion Cunningham, Knopf, 1996 100th anniversary printing of the 1980 publication of the author's updated re-write of the 1896 culinary landmark. The original went through 12 editions throughout the 20th century and has never been out of print.

It was James Beard who suggested that ex-student and cooking teacher Cunningham revise this classic. She finally accomplished the feat in the '80s, and, in this update is even better, since she's added 325 new recipes (out of a total of 1,990) including more ethnic as well as microwave, outdoor and vegetarian dishes. Plus, the titles of recipes new to this volume appear in bronze type; she also added an asterisk to denote a family favorite. Cunningham's update has been warmly received.
