From My Chateau Kitchen

by Anne Willan, Potter, first edition, 2000. Large hardback with DJ, 303 pages. Beautiful, profusely book illustrated with interior and exterior color photos by Langdon Clay of Willan's La Varenne cooking school, located in a magnificent centuries-old chateaux named Le Fey in Burgundy. The lavish book has more than 160 recipes, with many ingredients from her garden, in the care of the M. Milbert, who picks no vegetable before its time.

Former Brit Willan has long considered one of the top American authorities on French cooking, and her school is regarded as one of the finest in the world. She and her World Bank economist husband bought the place in 1982 (she also had a small inheritance from her banker father), installed the school, and lived there until recently moving to California. (The school's still there).

There are 300 color sumptuous photos of the countryside grounds of Le Fey, as well as the interiors, the school kitchens, and prepared dishes. There are also 160 recipes, and a charming narrative of family and neighborhood life by the author.

In addition to teaching, Willan has written at least two-dozen well-received cookbooks, including two culinary bibles: "La Varenne Pratique" and "French Regional Cooking." Her PBS "How To Cook" series also spawned a series of admired step-by-step "Look and Cook" cookbooks., which we carry.

Gorgeous book. Condition: VG+/VG+.
