Christmas Memories with Recipes (Julia Child, others)

by Delores Simon, ed., Farrar, Straus & Giroux, first printing, 1988. Hardback with DJ, 315. What a great idea this was! Ask Julia Child, Marcella Hazan and other prominent chefs, cooks and food writers to offer a childhood holiday memory as well as a recipe.

As a result, we get to read chapter-length recollections about the holiday family life of these folks, some for the first and only time. In most cases, these are entertaining and enlightening, since many came from immigrant backgrounds, or grew up overseas, and others had "quirky" families). Some remembrances go back into the '30s and the '40s.

To a person, their stories show how getting together in the kitchen during the holidays germinated their interest in cooking.

The other contributors, some of whom are still read, some whose popularity has faded, are: Lee Bailey, Jerhane Benoit (the last piece this Canadian writer wrote before her death), Robert Farrar Capon, Irena Chalmers, Craig Claiborne, Marion Cunningham, Robert Finigan, Carol Fliners, Betty Fussell, Ed Giobbi. Bert Greene, Jane Grigson, Helen Witty, Maida Heatter, Evan Jones, Jenifer Lang, Edna Lewis, Bryan Miller, Beatrice Ojakangas, Jacques P├ępin, Felipe Rojas-Lombardi, Julee Rosso and Martha Stewart. Recommended. Slight DJ wear at extremities. VG+/VG.
